Old Fort Niagara guards the mouth of the Niagara River as it empties into Lake Ontario, and was built in 1725 to protect the trade route for France's North American empire. Besieged by British troops in July, 1759, after reinforcements were defeated, Captain Pierre Pouchot surrendered. A legend of the fort concerns the French military chest, in which Pouchot's officers buried their valuables, never to return. In 1789, a Loyalist Quaker, Jeremiah Moore (ancestor of the author) brought his family to British Niagara. He had a map to the treasure and the legend says the British commander let him dig. Good read
This book was compelling from cover to cover. It had a very interesting plot, and was difficult to put down. I was often amused to read of locations I was very familiar with, and it gave wonderful insight into how our Loyalist ancestors suffered during their lengthy trek to safety in Canada, and then their extreme hardship during their first winter in Niagara.
A great book that mixes historical fiction with a modern day mystery. Wonderful characters exploring the history of the legend of buried gold at Old Fort Niagara, with insight into the way people lived and dreamed then and now. The strong writing and obvious extensive research make this a page-turner. I found the details of life among the Quakers in the old Colonial days fascinating. Moore is a writer of historical fiction equal to the best out there.
